From its earliest years, the Balochistan Institute of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences (BIPBS), has been fundamentally changing and shaping how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness and other conditions that affect the brain. The legacy, ethos and drive of the BIPBS have ensured its position at the forefront of mental health care, redefining mental illness, its treatment and its place in society.<\/span>
\nAt the BIPBS, our staff and students work to transform care for people who are affected by mental health illness, through world-class research, education and training, and to serve our communities locally and globally. We are at the forefront of global mental health research and through our partnerships that foster research and training in policy, prevention, treatment and care around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Innovation in mental health clinical care, education and research<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine is committed to excellence in three equally important areas: clinical care, education and research.<\/span>
\nWe are proud of our long record of clinical service to the residents of Los Angeles County. Much of our clinical activity is in the public sector, particularly at the Los Angeles County + University of Southern California (LAC+USC) Medical Center. In addition, we provide private outpatient and inpatient care at Keck Hospital of USC and the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital.<\/span>
\nEducation continues to be a high priority and core component of our mission. Our training programs in psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and psychosomatic medicine are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). We also offer a postdoctoral fellowship program in forensic psychology as well as clerkships for medical students. These programs provide excellent graduate educational experiences by combining the rich clinical resources of a large, public medical center and private clinical facilities with the academic excellence of a vibrant medical school department.<\/span>
\nThe department\u2019s diverse research programs have experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, particularly in the areas of psychiatric genetics, clinical treatments and health services research.<\/span><\/p>\n

The mission of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences is to:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u2022 Improve the quality of life for individuals and society by promoting health and mental health, via preventing and curing disease, ameliorating suffering, enriching the human mind, and promoting adaptation to life and illness.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Advance research of biomedical mental illness and adjustment by patients, families and others to medical and mental illness.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Educate today and tomorrow\u2019s psychiatrists, other physicians, allied mental health providers and scientists, helping them develop self-evaluation and quality-improvement skills for a lifetime of practice and investigation.<\/span>
\n\u2022 Provide service by promoting appreciation of the culture and diversity of our community, trainees, department and school, while developing leaders and engaging one another in questions that lead to change.<\/span><\/p>\n

About Our Research Programs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Over the past decade, the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences has expanded our research mission, collaborating with local, national and international partners to become a world leader in translational research, health services research, the neurosciences and other specialties.<\/span>
\nWe closely involve trainees \u2014 medical students, residents and postdoctoral fellows \u2014 in our research mission, in order to prepare the next generation of psychiatric research leaders.<\/span>
\nMany of our faculty members are associated with the Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute, where scientists conduct innovative research to discover the underlying causes of neurological and psychiatric disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n

We are committed to training the next generation of clinicians, teachers, researchers and leaders in the field.<\/span>
\nWe combine the rich clinical resources of a large, public medical center with the academic excellence of a vibrant university. We integrate the best of science, medicine, education, and state-of-the-art knowledge and treatment in psychiatry and behavioral health. Our dedicated faculty includes internationally recognized leaders in curriculum, evaluation, research and teaching methodology. All faculty members are committed to the best possible educational experiences for our students, residents, fellows and other trainees.<\/span>
\nOur training programs \u2014 in general psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry and psychosomatic psychiatry \u2014 are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).<\/span>

Residency Program<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

We play a leading role in health care delivery, in developing and teaching today\u2019s best health care practices, and serving the diverse and often underserved patients and communities in the greater Los Angeles area. Our trainees learn and contribute to the development of clinical, professional, decision-making, critical thinking and lifelong skills for practice and learning.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fellowship Programs<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The department offers three ACGME-accredited fellowship programs in child and adolescent, forensic and psychosomatic psychiatry. The department also offers a postdoctoral fellowship in forensic psychology.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clerkship Programs<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

The department works closely with medical students at multiple stages of their medical school education. The department supports the required psychiatric clerkship, in addition to electives or selectives. A wide range of psychiatric elective clerkships are available for medical students who have completed a basic psychiatric clerkship.<\/span><\/p>\n
